Why Europe
The world is ever changing. In the early 1900’s, 70% of the world’s Christians lived in Europe. Much has changed in 100 years. The Europe of yesterday was the center of Christianity. The Europe of today is fighting for its spiritual life.
Even the secular press acknowledges that Europe is in a state of spiritual decline:
“Passive indifference to faith has left Europe's churches mostly empty. ”
“Europeans are becoming Christian–phobic. ”
“Europe is quickly slipping into a new Dark Age. ”
“Christianity in Europe has reached the point of no return. ”
“Every major religion except Islam is declining in Western Europe. ”
“The decline of Christianity, not just in Britain but across Europe stands out as one of the most remarkable phenomena of our times. ”
“A militant atheism is on the move in Europe. ”
“Europe has embraced an anti-Christian theology that is alarming. ”
“Europe is the world’s spiritually darkest place. ”
“Contemporary Europe has become the most godless civilization the world has ever known. ”
“Europeans who describe themselves as atheists and agnostics have risen by 400% from 1990-2009. ”
Europe has become one of the world’s great harvest fields; it is now less than 2% evangelical Christian and the trend is spiraling downward.
Alarming statistics that confirm Europe’s spiritual decline:
- Europe is the least evangelized continent in the world.
- Less than 4% of Europeans attend church regularly.
- More than 250,000 villages, towns and cities in Europe do not have a single evangelical church.
- There are more practicing Muslims than evangelical Christians in France.
- 19 of the 25 highest percentages of atheists are in Europe.
- 7 of the 10 highest suicide rates are in Europe.
- 16 of the 20 lowest birth rates are in Europe.
- 85% of Germans have no hope for the future.
- 80% of the French people have never read, held, or seen a Bible.
Why Europe? Because…..Jesus loves every hardened heart, every broken heart and every searching heart in Europe.
Why Europe? Because…..the only Christianity most Europeans have ever known is a lifeless, dead, traditional, historical, religion.
Why Europe? Because…unless there is an extreme spiritual change, Europe will be overtaken by Islam, the fastest growing religion in the continent.
Why Europe? Because…..“Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost.” (Luke 19:10) Europe is lost.
Why Europe? Because…..Jesus said, “A doctor does not come for those who are healthy, but those who are sick. I did not come for the righteous but for sinners.” (Matt 9:12-13) Europe is sick.
EI exists to change the spiritual climate of Europe. As one European missionary recently said, “Europe is no longer post-Christian, it has become pre-Christian.” Europe is in a battle for its spiritual life. EI is engaged in the battle for Europe.
